How utility pump GPH calculators work

Plain-language guide to sizing a utility or trash pump from gallons, drain time, and lift head, with 2,000–5,000 GPH classes and NO_MATCH.

What this tool answers

You need a first-pass utility or trash pump class for moving a known volume of standing water in a target time with a known vertical lift. The calculator converts volume÷time into required GPH, then names the smallest class on this ladder (2,000 / 4,000 / 5,000 GPH) that also clears your head — or returns NO_MATCH.

Why head matters

Published GPH is typically near low head. A pump rated 4,000 GPH with only ~31 ft max head cannot clear a 35 ft lift even if flow demand is lower. This screen therefore requires both GPH and head clearance.

Hose friction and solids

Long horizontal hose and fittings add friction head. Debris size limits clog risk. Confirm discharge size and solids rating on the live listing before buying.

When the answer is NO_MATCH

If no class on this ladder clears both required GPH and lift, the site returns NO_MATCH. Slow the drain target, lower the discharge, or use a higher-rated pump — do not force a 5,000 GPH consumer class past its published head.
